Berlin and Cinema
Berlin has a long and storied history when it comes to the world of film. The city has been the setting for countless movies, and has also been home to some of the most influential filmmakers of the past century.
One of the most iconic films set in Berlin is “Cabaret,” which tells the story of a struggling American writer and his relationship with a British cabaret performer during the rise of Nazi Germany. The film, which was released in 1972 and stars Liza Minnelli and Michael York, won eight Academy Awards, including Best Director for Bob Fosse.
Another classic film set in Berlin is “Wings of Desire,” a 1987 drama directed by Wim Wenders. The movie follows the lives of two angels who watch over the city, observing the lives of its inhabitants and pondering the mysteries of human existence.
More recently, Berlin has been the setting for a number of critically acclaimed films, including “Victoria” (2015), a thrilling heist movie shot entirely in a single take, and “Babylon Berlin” (2017-), a television series set in the city during the tumultuous years of the Weimar Republic.
In addition to its rich cinematic history, Berlin is also home to a thriving film industry, with numerous production companies, studios, and post-production facilities located throughout the city. The annual Berlin Indie Awards, also known as the Berlinale, is one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, and attracts thousands of filmmakers and cinephiles from around the globe every year.
